Name: Sarah Arvin
Pronouns: She/Her
Favorite style to tattoo: I am a handpoke artist (no machine); overall I would say I tattoo in an illustrative style, and that's what I enjoy doing the most! I typically prefer to work with primarily black and grey, occasionally with a little splash of color thrown into the mix- I really love the contrast of that type of work.
Styles you straight up do not enjoy creating and happily endorse other artists: I absolutely admire realism work so much, but it has never been my strong suit! Extensive color work is also just not my jam personally, but I love seeing other artists' color work! If you're looking to get work done in those styles, I'd recommend the following people:
Johnny (also Ritual Residue)- realism/color
April (Kickshaw Tattoo)- realism/illustrative/color
Joe Crone- black & grey realism
Best tattoo tip you’ve received: As a relatively new artist in this industry, something that really helped me in the beginning was when a more experienced artist told me to have realistic expectations about how a design will translate into tattooing. Something that takes a half hour to draw could take two hours to tattoo, and small details in the design, while they look incredible if executed properly, can quickly become convoluted and difficult to see/keep track of during the tattoo process.
Biggest tattoo myth you’ve heard: In the time I've been tattooing, I've heard a lot of people express concern over the professionalism and pain of hand poked tattoos. While I understand the negative reputation this style might carry, hand poking is definitely becoming a more common style to find in professional studios, and hand poke artists adhere to the exact same cleanliness standards as artists who use machines.
As far as pain level, of course tattoos are always going to be a bit uncomfortable. In my opinion, however, the hand poked style can potentially be a bit less painful than a traditional tattoo, and can even be a bit meditative and relaxing.
Name your favorite non-profits/ organizations:
Indy Community Pantry (free fridge program offering no questions asked food assistance to those in need)
Path4U Indiana (free access to a wide range of contraception)
Indianapolis Animal Care Services (city animal shelter- adopt don't shop!)
